Recent study report on 'What is an Old Irish goat'

Ray Werner wrote this article after his December 2015 visit to survey Old Irish goat reports around Ireland.

The Society is always interested in following up on reports of possible Old Irish goat sightings around various parts of Ireland.  If you have an animal that resembles the Old Irish goat or think you have seen them on the hills, please supply a photograph as best you can.  We have made some unique discoveries of goats this way, but have also been led on some 'wild goose chases'.  Reportings are often helpful in our research, so please let us know if you think you have an Old Irish goat, send us a photo and we will go from there.

Ireland Funds Support Living Heritage

2014 Ireland Funds have contributed to the ongoing research and preservation of the Old Irish Goat. A small goat with long hair, large horns, small ears and a distinctive coiff of hair on the forehead.   Once a ubiquitous character of the traditional Irish farmstead, now endangered.  It is only found in feral herds where it is subject to uncontrolled crossbreeding, which is recognised as one of the greatest threats to indigenous breeds worldwide.  The greatest loss of genetic resources has occurred in Europe, with 16 of the 19 extinct goat breeds worldwide.  Efforts to save the Old Irish Goat from extinction are ongoing with support of the Ireland Funds.
